Taranga Beat

from $50.00

During my MFA in dance, I traveled to the Ivory Coast and Senegal with the Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble. That experience shifted how I understood rhythm, grounding, and the body.

My thesis grew directly out of that trip. The choreography was deeply grounded, and the breathwork emerged from the movement itself. At the end of the dance there was this repeated call — hah hah!, hah hah!, hah hah!…— and the movement demanded a gathering‑in of the body followed by a letting‑go, an opening. The sound, the breath, and the physicality were fused; they couldn’t be separated. Rootsong ended with an abrupt opening as the lights snapped off.

Taranga Beat was titled only recently because the piece carries that same African pulse for me. It wasn’t until I looked at the macro print again that I realized that vibe had slipped into the painting without my noticing.

This print is pulled from a much larger original painting that now hangs in a designer’s home. I chose this section because it carries such a distinct, magnetic vibe. The layered colors and cool greens, anchored by bold black, give it a powerful pulse. Finished with a clean dark border, it’s a piece that stays close to my heart.
